Dhaka University’s 98th founding today

To mark Dhaka University's 98th founding day (July 1) the university authority has chalked out elaborate programmes with the theme of “Quality education, barriers and solution”. DU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman announced a day-long programme schedule to mark the day in a press conference held at Abdul Matin virtual class room on Sunday.

DU VC Professor Akhtaruzzaman said, "we took elaborate initiative to upswing the educational quality and environment in the edge of hundreds year of University," DU VC called former students to come forward for advancement of the University. The day-long programmes include a procession to be brought out by teachers, students, officials and employees led by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman at 10:00am after hoisting the national as well as DU flags in all administrative buildings of the campus.

A discussion meeting titled 'Qualitative education ;barriers and solution ' will be held at 11 am at the TSC auditorium where Emeritus Professor Dr Sirajul Islam Chowdhury will present the keynote speech with the DU VC in chair. Different halls, departments and offices of the university will arrange different programs marking the day. Hall authorities will provide special meals on the day.

Arts Faculty building, Curzon Hall, TSC building and other important infrastructures of the university will be decorated with colourful lights.Rare manuscripts will be shown at varsity central library from 10am to 1am on the day. Moreover, a cricket match will be organised between Dhaka University central students union (DUCSU) and DU journalists Association (DUJA) at 3:00 am at the University central field.

The day will be observed to mark the launching of academic activities by the university on July 1, 1921. Starting off with just 877 students in three faculties and 12 departments in 1921, the university has grown to accommodate over 43,385 students and 2,010 teachers in 84 departments and 13 institutes at present.

The DU has played a vital role in Bangladesh history. Its students and teachers sacrificed their lives in the 1952 Language Movement, Mass Upsurge in 1969 and during the Liberation War in 1971. Even the national flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted at Bot Tola on the Dhaka University campus on March 2, 1971.
