Dhaka is going to join the cities boasting subway as a cabinet committee has approved the feasibility study for the construction of the underground railway in the capital.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase in a recent meeting gave go-ahead to the feasibility study, which will be done at an estimated cost of Tk 317.94 crore.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal chaired the meeting held at the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Wednesday in the capital.
Initially there was a plan to construct a 90-kilometre subway in Dhaka city, but lately the size of the underground railway was revised to 238 kilometres.
Officials said the estimated cost of the feasibility study has increased from previously calculated Tk 219.44 crore due to the increase in the length of the planned underground railway. Spain-based construction company ‘Technica’ will carry out the feasibility study.
After the committee meeting, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Nasima Sultana briefed newsmen about various aspects of the project.
She said the underground and land of Dhaka are similar to Osaka city in Japan and suitable for the construction of the subway.
“Because of this, the government is planning to build a subway 20 to 25 meters deep in the capital, just like Osaka city,” she said.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges first identified four routes for the construction of subway lines in Dhaka, but later a decision has been taken to build multiple lines under Dhaka.
They are 26.29 kilometre lines from Tongi to Sadarghat, 17.63 kilometres from Gabtoli to Purbachal, 16.63 kilometres from Bosila to Kayetpara and 13 kilometres from Hazaribagh to Rajarbagh, 13 kilometres from Kamrangirchar to New Market, 14 kilometres from Bosila to Malibagh, 14 kilometres from Gabtoli to Sashanghat, 13.76 kilometres from Gabtoli to Purbachal, and 28 kilometres from Tongi to Jheelmil.
