Dhaka reiterates support to ‘One China’ policy

Bangladesh has reiterated its firm adherence to ‘One China’ policy, urging the parties concerned to refrain from any unwarranted provocation.

Dhaka also urged the parties concerned to work towards lasting peace and stability in the region in the spirit of the UN Charter.

“Bangladesh has closely followed the recent election in Taiwan,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a brief message shared from its verified Facebook page on Monday night.

Last Saturday, the people of Taiwan chose pro-sovereignty candidate William Lai as their President.

China considers Taiwan part of China and opposes Taiwan’s independence.

Through the polls, Lai's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is going to assume office for the third consecutive term.

Just before the polls, China warned Taiwanese voters not to elect William Lai. Beijing described the election as a choice between ‘war and peace’. Instead of paying any

heed to the warning, Taiwanese cast votes for Lai. At present, China-Bangladesh relations are very good. The two countries are moving forward economically, socially and culturally through multidimensional cooperation.

Chinese company Power China first came forward to investing in the power sector of Bangladesh in 1997. Since then, more than 20 Chinese companies have been investing in Bangladesh.

China is increasingly recognised as the most trustworthy development partner of Bangladesh. As part of a strengthened bilateral trade and investment relationship, China has given Duty-Free (DF) access to 97 percent of Bangladeshi products from 1 July 2020.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said China is ready to work with Bangladesh to expand new cooperation in a wider range of areas.

He mentioned higher levels of connectivity, renewable energy, the blue economy, financial stability, digital empowerment, scientific and technological innovation, agriculture and food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development as areas of cooperation.

“With joint efforts, we will achieve common development and promote together the building of a community with a shared future for mankind,” said Ambassador Yao in an article.

The ambassador said the two nations are set to embrace a historic opportunity to further elevate bilateral relations and friendly cooperation in various fields by 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.

Over the past 52 years since its independence, Bangladesh has always been committed to exploring the path of modernisation in line with its own national conditions, and has made commendable achievements, he said.

The ambassador said China hopes that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the new Bangladeshi government will lead the people to proceed faster and steadier on the path of national prosperity and rejuvenation.
