Dhaka prepares to combat dengue

Capital Dhaka takes all out measures to combat mosquito menace and to prevent dengue outbreak as monsoon is approaching nearer

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is going to start combing operation in all wards under its territory today (Saturday) in order to protect the city dwellers from dengue.

The 10-day campaign will run from 10 am to 1 pm every day except Friday, DNCC sources said.

Each ward has been divided into 10 sectors for conducting combing operations and each sector is divided into 10 subsectors.

Combing operations will be conducted in one sector of each ward or 10 sub-sectors every day. Thus, in the next 10 days, the combing operation will be completed in the entire DNCC area, DNCC Public Relations Officer ASM Mamun said.

 He said, “Some 4 DNCC cleaners and one mosquito extermination worker will work in each sub-sector.” 

Thus, 40 cleaners and 10 mosquito workers in each ward will go to different houses and establishments under DNCC every day to examine whether there are Aedes mosquito larvae or stagnant water for more than three days, he added. 

 DNCC chief health officer brigadier general Momimur Rahman Mamun said, “During the combing operation, some 9 entomologists from the Department of Health, 3 entomologists from the DNCC, officials from the Health Department and Waste Management Department will be present.”

He said, “Necessary pictures, addresses, mobile numbers and other information regarding  Aedes mosquito larvae or Aedes mosquito breeding environment will be immediately stored in an app (application software) during the combing operation.” 

“This will create a database of Aedes mosquitoes breeding in some areas of the DNCC at the end of the combing operation. According to the database, it will be easier to monitor them later,” he added. 

DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Amirul Islam created this app.

Besides, the Directorate General of Health Services will provide various assistances to control the Aedes mosquito. 

Moreover, DNCC conducted combing operations in some 5 wards include ward no 1, 6, 12, 18 and 32 from May 16 to before Eid-ul-Fitr. 

At that time, DNCC officials found Aedes mosquito larvae in some 187 houses by inspecting about 9,463 houses under these ward. 

Along with the combing operation, a mobile court headed by DNCC regional executive officers and executive magistrates will also be conducted to control the Aedes mosquito. 

In addition, the mobile court on Aedes mosquito control started from May 10 at the DNCC. A total of Tk 4.26 lakh has been collected so far through the mobile court for finding Aedes mosquito larvae in different houses and establishments.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam also urged the ward councilors, councilors of reserved seats and people from all walks of life of the DNCC to make the combing operation a complete success.

Meanwhile, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) also continuded mosquito controling activitis through larviciding and fogging at differnt wards under its territory.
