Dhaka mourns with Beijing for coronavirus victims

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has expressed his ‘solidarity’ with the China in mourning for those who died in the Coronavirus pandemic. The foreign ministry said Dr Momen sent a message to his counterpart Wang Yi as China officially mourned the victims on Saturday.

“I am very touched to learn that People’s Republic of China is going to observe mourning on 4 April 2020 for the martyrs who died in fight against the fatal COVID – 19 pandemic and compatriots died of corona virus infection,” read the message.

Dr Momen also expressed his deep condolences for the loss of lives due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in Wuhan city and other places in China.  He conveyed his sincere sympathy for the families of the victims.

President Xi Jinping led the nation to the mourning for ‘martyrs’ who died fighting the novel coronavirus disease first emerged from China’s Wuhan city.

A total of 81,639 confirmed COVID-19 cases had been reported on the Chinese mainland, and 3,326 people had died of the disease, according to the National Health Commission on Saturday.

The commemoration lasted for three minutes, Xinhua reports. They had white flowers pinned to the chest and paid a silent tribute in front of a national flag, flying at half-mast. A moment of silence was observed countrywide. Air raid sirens blared. Cars, trains and ships honked horns.

“In commemoration of the martyrs and deceased compatriots, national flags flew at half-mast across the country and in all Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, and public recreational activities were suspended nationwide Saturday,” according to the Xinhua.

The Bangladesh foreign minister assured that the people and the government of Bangladesh are with the people and the government of China to address the crisis.

He also extended his sincere thanks to Chinese Foreign Minister for taking well care of Bangladeshi citizens living in China at the tragic moment of Coronavirus outbreak.

The Foreign Minister also wishes for Chinese Foreign Minister’s good health and continued peace, progress and prosperity of China, according to the statement.
