Authorities have closed the Dhaka Medical College for an indefinite period amid stalemate over 5-point demand of its students.

Dhaka Medical College will remain closed for an indefinite period starting Sunday (June 22), according to a notice signed by DMC Principal Dr Md Kamrul Alam.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the college’s academic council on Saturday, the notice says.

The students have been instructed to vacate their dormitories by 12 noon on Sunday.

Professional MBBS examinees and foreign students will remain out of the purview of the order, the notice says.

The students of the college have been staging demonstrations to press home their demands, including better residential facilities.

Abdullah Al Noman, a fourth-year student of the medical college, said they would not follow the authority decision to vacate halls and will continue their protests.

He said the old academic building and the Dr Fazle Rabbi Hostel for male students and Dr Alim Chowdhury Women Hostel are in dire condition and no longer suitable for academic or residential use.

So, the students have been boycotting the classes from May 28 seeking renovation of buildings and involvement of students in this process to ensure transparency, he said.
