In a significant development for the aviation industry in Bangladesh, multiple foreign airlines have expressed keen interest in operating flights to and from the country, opening up a plethora of global destinations for passengers.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has confirmed the growing interest from prominent airlines worldwide.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a major player in the international aviation sector, has seen four of its renowned carriers, namely Emirates, Etihad Airways, Fly Dubai, and Air Arabia, express their desire to carry passengers from Bangladesh to different global destinations under fifth freedom.
However, the UAE’s request for fifth freedom rights, which would allow them to operate flights between Bangladesh and third countries, was turned down by the CAAB. However, it will be considered once the construction of the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is completed.
Bangladesh’s aviation sector is also witnessing increased attention from carriers beyond the UAE. Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air, Iran Air, Iraqi Airways, and two Indian airlines have all shown interest in serving Dhaka, the capital city. These airlines envision establishing air routes that connect Bangladesh to diverse global destinations, thereby expanding travel options for passengers. CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mofidur Rahman, confirmed that Ethiopian Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), British Airways, Garuda Indonesia, and Iraq Airlines are among those interested in operating flights to Bangladesh. PIA, in particular, has expressed its desire to resume flight operations multiple times after a six-year suspension. Additionally, British Airways seeks to reinstate its flights to and from Bangladesh after a hiatus of 12 years.
With plans underway to transform Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport into a three terminal one, civil aviation officials anticipate that several foreign airlines will soon commence operations in Bangladesh. This development is expected to not only enhance air connectivity but also promote tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Bangladesh and the rest of the world.
As the aviation landscape in Bangladesh undergoes significant changes, passengers can look forward to a broader range of travel options and improved connectivity to their desired international destinations.
