With Joe Biden in Washington, Bangladesh is expecting that the relationship with the United States will reach a ‘higher height’ in the coming days.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told reporters that President-elect Biden is a known face for Bangladesh as he served eight years as the Vice-President under the Obama Administration.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while congratulating Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris said Bangladesh, over the years since its independence in 1971, has forged an “excellent and durable” relationship with the U.S.A.

“Now with you at the helm of affairs of your country, I foresee the relationship reaching higher heights in the coming days,” she said in her message to Biden.

The foreign minister talking to reporters said the new administration would strengthen the relations on core issues considering Bangladesh’s geographical location.

“We hope the new leadership (US) will strengthen its ties with us accepting Bangladesh as a very powerful country geopolitically and as an emerging nation,” he said on Sunday.

He said they are expecting a ‘positive’ approach from the Biden administration on climate, immigration, trade and investment issues.

Dr Momen also expected that the US would become more vocal on the Rohingya issue.

Prime Minister Hasina wished to work closely with President Biden to effectively confronting the “evils of terrorism, violent extremism, hatred, forced displacements of the Rohingyas, and for the realization of a safer and better world”.

She expressed her firm confidence that President Biden “by his sagacity and astute leadership would lead the world into a new era of global peace, and international cooperation in securing prosperity and unity in facing the challenges of climate change”.

Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the US, defeating Donald Trump. He will be sworn into the office on January 20.
