The capital, Dhaka, has been going through a massive transformation for the past decade. The beginning of this transformation started with the opening of a number of flyovers across the capital. However, currently, the four mega projects which the capital dwellers are looking at comprise of metro rail, elevated expressway, bus rapid transit and the proposed underground railway.

While it cannot be denied that the present government has been relentlessly working to reshape the country’s transportation and power sector, it is also true that we have seen apathy in implementation of most of the development schemes taken up by the government over the last ten years.

Nevertheless, we believe once completed, these projects will provide a massive scope for reducing the ever elusive solution to traffic congestion. Also a few more routes of the metro rail have been proposed recently and are soon to begin construction. It is envisaged these will make the commuting of citizens from one corner of the capital to another very much time dissipative.

Moreover, the proposed underground railways or also known as MRT Line 1 will connect the important airport zone with Kamalapur. The projects deadline in 2026 suggests that there is still a long time for this to be realised. The new proposed MRT Line 5 will connect a number of areas directly to the capital. Moreover, the time required to travel between these two points will be substantially reduced.

The local transport system whether by bus or by CNG causes a lot of time to be wasted being stuck in the traffic. Everyday thousands of people travel across various points in the capital. Often times there are traffic congestions on the roads due to increase of vehicles on the road. Hence, an underground line connected to all the important parts of the capital will be a great step forward towards development.

On top of all the benefits, the mega projects are bound to bring up scopes for other development opportunities in the country. The authorities concerned should take note on the traffic congestions which occur during construction of such communication related development projects and take steps to prevent it from taking place.
