Dhaka Ahsania Mission has extended its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh for approving the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, terming it a historic and timely step towards protecting public health. The organization expressed this reaction through a press release following the approval of the ordinance at the meeting of the Advisory Council.
The press release stated that tobacco use is one of the leading causes of cancer and various non-communicable diseases. In Bangladesh, more than 130,000 people die prematurely every year due to tobacco-related illnesses. In this context, the revised ordinance has strengthened the existing law by banning e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTP), and other emerging tobacco products. Additionally, nicotine pouches have been brought under the legal definition of tobacco products.
The organization further noted that measures such as banning the use of all types of tobacco products in public places and public transport, prohibiting tobacco advertising and display, and requiring 75% graphic health warnings on tobacco packaging reflect the government’s strong commitment to safeguarding public health.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission believes that the prompt gazette publication and effective implementation of this amended ordinance will significantly advance the protection of citizens from the harmful effects of tobacco and benefit future generations.
