Dense fog disrupts ferry services

Several hundred vehicles, including passenger buses, remained stranded at Paturia and Daulatdia terminals on as ferry and launches services on Paturia-Daulatdia routes were disrupted for six hours due to dense fog. Thousands of passengers suffered a lot for hours on both sides of the Padma river.

Khandaker Tanvir Hossain, Assistant Genarel Manager (Com.) of BIWTC at Aricha sector said, the ferry services were disrupted from 3.300 am to 9:30 am bringing traffic to a complete halt and causing immense sufferings to passengers, particularly women and children.

Shapla-Shaluk, an Utility ferry with vehicles and passengers kept anchored in mid Jamuna river while several others remained stranded at Paturia and Daulatdia due to the dense fog, he said.

Ferry services resumed at about 9:30 am on Tuesday  when the foggy weather improved, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha sector Jillur Rahman said. About 300 vehicles from Dhaka lined up at Paturia in Manikganj and 400 vehicles lined up at Daulatdia in Rajbari, sources said. Menwhile, dense fog disrupted movement of transport vehicles and water vessels in the Padma and Jamuna on Tuesday.
