Dense fog, bitter cold hit Boro seedbeds in Thakurgaon

The dense fog from early evening till morning, falling of snowy dew drops as a form of rainfall at mid night, occasional rainfall and bright sunshine at day time was damaging the boro seeds at the seed-beds of farmers of Thakurgaon district.  Despite taking precaution and applying of insecticides, the boro saplings are being attacked in cold-injury and dying by turning yellow. It is learnt, a mild cold wave has been blowing  throughout five upazilas of Thakurgaon for the last two weeks. 

The Boro paddy saplings at the seed beds of the farmers of the district being attacked with cold wave. Farmers were desperately trying to save the saplings by covering those with polythene sheets and spraying insecticides but with no effect. As a result, the boro farmers of the district were worried about the target of Boro production in the district may not be achieved this year.  Sources of Department of Agriculture Extension informed, a target of cultivating boro paddy has been fixed on 63,000 hectares of land in the district this year and the seedbed is required to be prepared on nearly 5,000 hectares of land for this purpose. 

Aftab Uddin, Deputy Director of District Agriculture Extension Office informed, there is apprehension of damage of saplings at the seed beds due to dense fog and cold. He suggested the farmers to cover the seed beds with polythene and to use water at the seed bed in the evening and remove that water in the morning again to save the saplings. Moreover, he also suggested to apply Urea or Gypsum fertiliser in the seed bed to get rid of damage of saplings during the winter.
