With the coming of rains, the country is facing a number of difficult problems. A long time thorn on the sides of the common people has been the outbreak of dengue that takes place each year.

Last year the number of people who were infected with dengue was far worse than the previous years and major drives were conducted to fight the aedes mosquitoes. This year too there is imminent danger of dengue outbreak following the heavy downpours of monsoon.

Experts are of the opinion that city-dwellers may witness a worse dengue outbreak in July-August this year if proper activities to curb the menace are not carried out in a short time.

The Dhaka North and South City Corporations are taking all out measures to combat the mosquito menace and to prevent dengue outbreak as monsoon is approaching nearer by the day. Proper safety measures against dengue must be taken in this time of crisis to prevent further fatalities from taking place.

At this time, general healthcare is already in disarray and people are failing to get proper treatment because of the healthcare personnel having their hands full of the coronavirus patients.

However, it is imperative that proper directives be provided to the hospitals in case of encountering any dengue cases as in both dengue and coronavirus cases the symptom of fever is common.

In the midst of all this, it is encouraging to know that 40 cleaners and 10 mosquito workers in each ward will go to different houses and establishments under DNCC every day to examine whether there are aedes mosquito larvae or stagnant water for more than three days and work accordingly to rid the place of the problems.

Above all, steps need to be taken at the household level. People need to be aware of these issues, and keep their houses clean. The best way to prevent the disease from spreading in settlements is to remove waterlogged areas, keep the settlements clean and properly dump bio-degradable garbage away from human settlements and use insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
