Hundreds of men and women, including union parishad (UP) members of Bhaina union parishad under Harinakundu upazila in Jhenaidah, staged demonstration in front of the union parishad building on Tuesday protesting irregularities of chairman Samir Uddin

It was alleged that the chairman has been running the office at his personal will with the cooperation of an entrepreneur Shishir.

The agitated people also sent memorandum to government high officials including the Anti-Corruption Commission. The evil activities of the chairman have been hampering the usual activities and affecting the people, said a number of members of the UP.

In a written complaint to the ministry of relief and rehabilitation, ACC in Dhaka and Jashore, deputy commissioner in Jhenaidah and upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Harinakundu, the petitioners said the chairman has been furnishing all official activities ignoring the members of the parishad. He has been allegedly collecting money against allocation of VGD rice among the poor and distressed people.

Fertilizer and seeds as incentives among the farmers are not furnished in proper way and the beneficiaries are deprived of the same. The chairman had collected Taka 20 thousand to 25 thousand from the women engaged in working in road maintenance programmes of local government engineering department (LGED).

The construction work of Hatchandina, a shed in the market was not completed as in many years as the chairman Samir Uddin has been doing it himself. He did not form any committee for project implementation committee (PIC).

Each and every activity of Samir Uddin has been furnished by the entrepreneur Shishir, while he was arrested and set to prison for his alleged corruption. Although the case was not acquitted, Shishir has been working in the union parishad as usual unethically.

When this correspondent tried to contact the chairman of union parishad Samir Uddin over cell phone, he could not be contacted after repeated attempts.

Upazila nirbahi officer of Harinakundu Syeda Nafis Sultana when contacted said the members of the UP had met her and she had assured of legal action for any illegal activities if it is proved.
