Decade’s highest turnover in DSE

Turnover at Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at over Tk 25,000 million on Tuesday, the highest in last one decade as most of the investors were making fresh investment on the market amid high hopes.

The major indicator of the stock market rose 16 percent to Tk 25468.26 crore, telecom and pharmaceuticals sector played a major role for this.

Besides, the DSE witnessed a record growth due to share transfer of GlaxoSmithKline to Unilever.

Market analysts said the investors were busy buying spree on major-sector stocks amid high expectations riding on regulatory efforts, the gradual traction in economic activities coupled with hope for the Covid-19 vaccine.

They said the regulatory efforts to build a stable and vibrant capital market and enlistment of quality IPO’s in the market also tempted investors to stay afloat on the trading floor.

On the other hand, stocks witnessed a falling streak on Tuesday with the key index of the country's major bourse stood at 5609.70 points, went down by 50.13 points or 0.88 percent over the previous session.

The DSE market-cap also fell to Tk 4,677 billion on Tuesday, from an all-time high of Tk 4,687 billion in the previous day.

Losers took a strong lead over the gainers, as out of 360 issues traded, 197 ended lower, 113 closed higher and 50 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Stocks of Robi Axiata was top of the turnover list on the day-- traded Tk 256 crore, followed by Beximco Pharmaceuticals that traded Tk 164 crore, according to the Dhaka Stock Exchange data.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a negative trend with the CASPI falling 134 points to stand at 16237.70 points.

Of the issues traded, 115 gained, 149 declined, and 34 issues remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 67.61 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover value of nearly Tk 1.55 billion.
