Death toll from jet crash further revised down to 33

The health ministry on Sunday further revised down the death toll from the July 21 air force jet crash at Milestone College in Dhaka's Uttara to 33, following two updates issued within a span of six and a half hours.

The ministry first revised the toll to 34 at 10:17am.

However, a second revision was issued at 4:50pm through its public relations officer, lowering the number to 33 -- two fewer than the previously reported figure.

The first update was based on corrections from the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), which had initially recorded 15 fatalities.

According to a Facebook post from the ministry, the CMH morgue had received 15 body bags on the day of the crash.

Of these, Turag police conducted inquests on 11 full bodies, two partial bodies, and body parts from five others. Nine of the complete bodies were identified -- eight were handed over to families on July 21, and the remaining one on July 22.

On July 22, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) forensic team collected DNA samples from the two unidentified full bodies, two partial bodies, and the body parts of five others.

DNA results later confirmed the identities of five more individuals.

A health ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the CMH had initially listed six unidentified victims among the 15, but the DNA analysis revealed there were only five.

Consequently, CMH revised its count from 15 to 14.

This led the health ministry to update the overall death toll from 35 to 34.

In its final revision today, the ministry confirmed that the unidentified deceased person previously reported by Lubana Hospital and the deceased patient at United Hospital were in fact the same individual.

As a result, the official death toll now stands at 33.

Meanwhile, 48 others injured in the incident are still receiving treatment in different hospitals.
