The death toll from Narayanganj mosque explosion on Sunday rose to 24 as three more victims succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

The deceased were primarily identified as Zulhas Farazi (35), Shamim (45) and Mohammad Ali (55).

Dr Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of the institute, told that Zulhas, Ali and Shamim embraced death while undergoing treatment on Sunday morning.

He hinted that the death toll may further increase as most of the patients have inhalation injuries.

Meanwhile, a case was filed with Fatullah Model Police Station on Saturday night for negligence over the air conditioner (AC) explosion in the mosque.

Sub Inspector (SI) Humayun Kabir filed the case against unidentified persons, alleging negligence that resulted in the explosion and casualties.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatullah Model Police Station Aslam Hossain confirmed it to the local journalists. He further said the horrific blast at Baitus Salah Jame Mosque might have happened due to negligence.

“Persons who will be found responsible for the explosion in the investigation by the probe committee will be brought to book,” he added.

Meanwhile, various local politicians including Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy on Sunday visited the spot. Some civil society members including Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury also visited the place.

They urged the authorities concerned to investigate the matter properly and ensure punishment of the persons responsible for the mishap.
