Two members of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, who were sentenced to death in Jagriti Publications publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case, escaped from the premises of Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Sunday. The escapees are Md Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab and Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Sifat alias Imran.

A gang of four terrors riding on two motorcycles went to the court area and snatched the two death-row convicts around 12 noon on Sunday after spraying some chemical on the eyes of the law enforcers. Earlier, the two death-row convicts were produced before Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station.

When various vested elements especially anti-liberation and communal forces led by BNP-Jamaat clique are now out to create chaos, the militant organisations are also trying stage show down ahead of the next national polls. It is disconcerting to note that the law enforcers did not take adequate security measures while dealing with militants and high-risk criminals.

The government must

 reinforce security and

vigilance to avert any

untoward incident

Only four cops were escorting 12 militants, including death row convicts, when unidentified attackers attacked and snatched two of them. Such incidents raises question raised about the cops’ performance. The government issued a red alert at all entry and exit points of the country to arrest the death row convicts who escaped from the court premises. Law enforcement agencies beefed up their surveillance at the border areas so that they cannot leave the country.

High ups of different law enforcement agencies several times claimed that there is no possibility of major militant attack in the country, as they have already destroyed their networks and capacities. But, they should not think that terror outfits are no longer capable of carrying out large-scale subversive activities in the country.  They must remain alert by intensifying security measures across the country, in light of Sunday’s incident. They must reinforce security and vigilance to avert any untoward incident.
