Ayesha Siddika Minni, who was sentenced to death in the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif, sought bail from the High Court. Minni received the death sentence for conspiring with her husband’s killers.

She had petitioned the High Court for bail. The petition was filed with the relevant High Court wing last week.

Advocate Shahinujjaman Shahin, a lawyer of Minni, confirmed the matter to journalists. “We submitted a mention slip to the court for a hearing. We will have a hearing when our serial number comes up.”

The lawyer said that the HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam may hold hearing on Minni’s bail plea as well as her previous appeal against the death penalty and death reference.

The death references for the six death-row convicts are also at the High Court.

Earlier on September 30 in 2020, the Barguna court awarded death sentence to six people, including Minni, in the much-talked-about murder case. Besides, four other accused were acquitted.

The death convicts are- Ayesha Siddika Minni, Rakibul Hasan Rifat Farazi, Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Akon, Muhaiminul Islam Sifat, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktak Hridoy and Md Hasan.

Those who were acquitted are Rafiul Islam Rabbi, Md Sagar, Kamrul Islam Saimun and Md Musa.

On June 26 in 2019, Rifat Sharif was attacked by Noyon Bond and his associates in front of the main gate of Barguna Government College in broad daylight. He succumbed to his injuries in Barishal Medical College Hospital.

However, Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayon Bond, the key accused and so-called lover of Minni, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the law enforcers days after the incident.

The attackers launched the attack when the Sharif-Minni couple were returning home from Barguna Government College, in which Minni was a first-year undergraduate student.

Later, a video of Minni’s desperate attempts to save her husband from the attackers went viral on social media.

The next day of the incident, Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif filed a murder case with Barguan Sadar police station. The case subsequently took a new turn after Dulal accused Minni of having a hand in the killing.

On September 1 that year, police submitted separate charge sheets to the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Barguna, accusing 10 adults and 14 juveniles. The Barguna District and Sessions Judge Court framed charges against the 10 accused in the murder case on January 1 in 2020.
