Deaths from coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in Bangladesh are increasing gradually while the cure rate is slower compared to other countries in the world, available data shows. Besides, infection cases in the country were found higher amid relatively lower testing rate compared to other countries in the world.
On Saturday, Bangladesh reported 9 new deaths from COVID-19 in the 24 hours and 309 new cases were detected by testing 3,337 samples. Whereas, no patients were revered from nearly 5,000 infection cases so far on the day. Earlier on Friday, the country reported 4 new deaths and 4 recoveries from coronavirus infection while a record 509 new cases were detected by testing 3,686 samples.
Among all closed cases of coronavirus infection in the world, 20% patient died of coronavirus infection while 80% recovered from the infection until April 25, according to world meter providing information on global coronavirus situation. As of April 25, among the worst affected countries, USA reported 32% deaths and 68% recovery, Spain reported 20% percent deaths and 80% percent recovery, Italy reported 30% deaths and 70% recovery, France reported 34% deaths and 66% recovery while Germany reported only 5% deaths and 95% recovery among the closed infection cases, world meter showed.
Besides, our neighbouring country India reported 12% deaths and 88% recovery while only 44.4 percent infected patients recovered out of a total of 252 closed cases in Bangladesh until April 25. Asked about relatively lower recovery rate and higher death rate, IEDCR Director (report) Dr AHM Alamgir told Bangladesh Post, “Hospitalization time is relatively lengthy in the coronavirus infection cases. It requires 2 to 6 weeks for recovery. We test two times - after finding a patient cured and then declare the patient as recovered. Since we did not pass so many times after getting the first cases, we cannot claim the recovery is too slow.”
About the immunity of Bangladeshi people, Dr Alamgir said, “There is no difference between the people of Bangladesh and other countries. Many general people say that Bangladeshi people generally show more resistance power. We have increased tolerance. But it is all wrong.”
“The immunity standard of the people of our country is the same as in other countries in the world. The immunity or ability to resist any infection mostly depends on the food habit of the respective people,” he added. He suggested eating a balanced diet including fruits, vegetables and fish to increase the immunity.
While the elder patients are mostly dying from the coronavirus around the world, it is less pronounced in Bangladesh. The dead include a wide cross-section of the population in the country. There are children in the list of the dead. There are relatively younger persons among the dead as well, who are expected to have stronger immune systems.
The experts also say that Covid-19 is not sparing anyone in Bangladesh. The data does not show that any specific group or type of people are falling victim to the disease. People of all backgrounds, ages and social strata are dying from it. Former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Professor Nazrul Islam said, "It cannot be confirmed which class of people are mostly dying now. But death does not respect class. More people are dying here than getting cured. It is alarming that a child and young people also died here. But the scenario is different in other countries.”
Dr Nazrul, also a virologist, said, “Most patients are not getting the right treatment while many are dying for not being tested. Also, our youths have low immunity and some even have other complications. This is the reason many young people are dying here.” According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), the total death from Covid-19 in Bangladesh was 140 and only 112 infected patients recovered from 4,998 infection cases so far. The first corona death in Bangladesh was confirmed on March 18.
According to IEDCR data, as of April 13, the total death from coronavirus infection was 39 and total recovery from the infection was 42. From April 5, since the test facility increase, the coronavirus infection cases found to increase gradually in Bangladesh. A total of 2,835,093 people infected by coronavirus globally, of them, 197,452 died and 808,064 recovered until April 20, according to world meter.
