A dead spinner dolphin was found on Sonarpara beach of Cox's Bazar sea coast on Friday. Bangladesh Marine Research Institute (BORI) senior scientific officer Tarikul Islam said that the dead dolphin floated ashore around 5 pm. He said the dead dolphin was kept in the campus of the Marine Research Institute. The length of spinner dolphin is 8 feet and weight is 95 kg. It is assumed that the dolphin might have died within 24 hours.
Tarikul Islam said there was no injury mark on the body of the dolphin. Its teeth were blunt. There was no food in its stomach. Its body was not decomposed. It is believed that the dolphin might have died due to old age.
Earlier on February 14 to 16 this year, two Irrawaddy dolphins and a humpback dolphin and an endangered species of mammal Porpoises were seen in Sugandha, Himchhari and Inani beaches. Apart from this, an Irrawaddy dolphin floated on Himachari beach on February 25. On March 30 in 2023, a dead Irrawaddy dolphin washed up on Sugandha Point beach. Earlier on February 8 of the same year, a dead dolphin of the same species washed up on the beach in Inani. Dead dolphins washed up on the same beach on August 23 and March 20 in 2022. In early April 2020, two dead dolphins washed up on Teknaf beach.
