Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's long-running contract saga finally looks to be over. Journalist Duncan Castles reports in the Daily Record that the goalkeeper has agreed terms on an extension that could keep him at Old Trafford for another five years.
There had been considerable uncertainty over the Spanish international's future as he entered the final year of his existing deal.
That meant he was eligible to leave for nothing next summer, with Juventus, PSG, and Real Madrid all hovering.
Instead, the three-time United Player of the Year will be elevated to the very top of the Red Devils' pay-scale.
Per the same report, he will become their highest earner and will finally, in acquiescence to his demands, be in the same bracket as Paul Pogba.
De Gea will be raking in €15million, or £13.3m, after tax - which is around £255,000-a-week.
It's quite the leap when you consider his previous contract saw him earn in the region of £200,000 a week.
Ahead of the Leicester game on Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had told reporters: "We've seen that over the years, and I hope that I can make sure that he'll finish his career at Man United at the highest level. There's been loads of talks, loads of discussions between David and the club, and hopefully we can get it done."
The Norwegian can now breathe a huge sigh of relief.
However, for this news to be greeted with universal joy around United, the former Atletico Madrid man's form will need to improve.
The 28-year-old's form has dipped over the last year or so and he has received fresh criticism after making errors in the early part of this season.
Just this week, Edwin van der Sar warned him he was "replaceable" at the Theatre of Dreams, while Mark Schwarzer described his form for the last six months as "average".
United let in more goals than any other side in the top nine last term - admittedly a by-product of their woeful defence too, not just who was between the sticks, admittedly.
De Gea's decline has been put down partly to the level of off-field speculation surrounding his
next move, however, and a new deal could finally see his confidence return.
