Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Mohammad Saiful Islam on Sunday urged all government, semi-government departments, autonomous bodies, educational institutions and various socio-cultural organizations to complete events marking the ‘July Uprising’ very smoothly and in an orderly manner.
He was presiding over the July monthly meeting of the Khulna District Development Coordination Committee at the Deputy Commissioner's Conference Room here.
The DC noted that heavy rainfall is forecasted in the Khulna region during the last week of July and early August due to the monsoon.
Preventive measures must be taken in advance to deal with potential water logging in Khulna city and the Fultala and Dumuria areas, he added.
He warned that no canal flow should be obstructed in a way that harms public interest.
Roads damaged by the rains across various parts of Khulna must be repaired promptly.
Assistant Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police Khondokar Hossain Ahmed stated that police are working sincerely and in line with public expectations. Regular patrols and checkpoints are active in Khulna city.
Investigations have successfully revealed the causes behind recent murders, and suspects have been arrested. Surveillance has also been increased to curb the activities of juvenile gangs, he said.
Md. Nazrul Islam, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, reported that heavy rainfall over the past two weeks damaged crops on 565 hectares of land out of a total of 23,958 hectares in Khulna.
Among the affected crops are-Aus and Aman paddy, jute, chili, vegetables, watermelon, beans, and ginger. However, seedbeds of transplanted Aman in 481 hectares were also damaged.
A total of 13,071 farmers were affected, with an estimated financial loss of approximately Tk 27.65 crore, he said. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Bitan Kumar Mondal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Anisuzzaman, Civil Surgeon Dr. Mosammat Mahfuza Khatun, various government officials, UNOs, and committee members, were present at the meeting.
