DC's initiative saves 500 Tangail families from river erosion

Under the emergency riverbank protection initiative, temporary preventive work is being carried out along the left bank of the Dhaleshwari River to safeguard residents of Omorpur and Charpauli villages in Kakua Union of Tangail Sadar upazila. The project covers 510 metres of the riverbank with geo-tube and geo-bag dumping and placing.

The emergency work was formally inaugurated on Friday by Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque.

Also present at the event were Md Motiur Rahman, Executive Engineer of the Tangail Water Development Board, Nahida Akter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Tangail Sadar, and Zakir Hossain, Upazila Engineer of Tangail Sadar, among others.

Speaking at the inauguration, DC Sharifa Haque said sudden erosion had occurred on the left bank of the Dhaleshwari River, putting houses, arable land, rural roads, a madrasa and educational institutions at risk. To address the emergency, a temporary riverbank protection project has been undertaken covering 510 metres at a cost of Tk 9.87 million through geo-tube and geo-bag dumping and placing.

She added that this initiative will protect the homes and lands of about 500 families, along with local roads and schools, from further damage. A permanent project will later be undertaken to provide long-term protection against river erosion.
