The persisting cold wave coupled with dense fog has intensified in different parts of the country, particularly the north, northwest and central regions, paralysing life and causing untold sufferings for the people, particularly low-income group. Rickshaw pullers, day labourers as well as street children and elderly people are bearing the brunt of the biting cold.

A mild cold wave is sweeping Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and the districts of Jashore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Tangail, Madaripur and Kishoreganj and it may continue, Met Office forecasts on Monday.

While for many winter has arrived as the season of weddings, picnic, stylish warm clothes, badminton games and pitha (cake), it is like a hell for the poor people as their sufferings know no bounds due to the bone-chilling cold. The elderly people, women and children are the worst sufferers, especially in rural and riverine char areas. Meanwhile, the district and upazila administrations, NGOs, business bodies, financial institutions and charitable organisations have intensified distribution of blankets and other warm clothes like sweater, muffler and wrapper among the cold-hit people in different cold-hit districts.

Crops are also being badly

affected

by the dense fog

The sun remained covered by thick layers of dense fog affecting traffic and forcing the drivers to put headlights of their vehicles on to avert any accidents. Day-labourers and rickshaw-pullers cannot go outside to earn their bread.

Many people were seen crowding shops to buy warm clothes and quilts on Monday. The situation marked a little improvement with the appearance of the sun for a brief time, giving some respite to the people. But the poor are still feeling the chill as the mercury dips significantly after dusk.

Most people preferred to stay indoors due to severe cold. Crops are also being badly affected by the dense fog. On the other hand, different hospitals and upazila health complexes are struggling to deal with huge number of patients suffering from cold-related diseases.  Various cold-related diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, asthma and respiratory problem marked a sharp rise in recent days.

The government and the affluent have to come forward with relief immediately for the people cannot go out for livelihood due to the biting cold. It should be our moral responsibility to stand by the distressed people in every crisis period.
