Charlie Cox says that the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again will be something completely new, not a season 4 to Netflix's Daredevil.

Charlie Cox has described the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series as "a whole new thing." The new series is expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in Spring 2024, and will star Cox as Matt Murdock. Daredevil: Born Again will be a part of the MCU's Phase 5, and will be the MCU's 27th television series to date.

Cox first appeared as Murdock in the television series Daredevil, which premiered exclusively on Netflix in 2015. The series ran for 3 seasons, and Cox also starred as Daredevil in the Netflix miniseries The Defenders in 2017. While Daredevil was canceled by Netflix in 2018, there were rumors that the series might continue on Disney+, as the streaming service was launched in November 2019. In May 2022, it was confirmed that a Daredevil TV series was being developed for Disney+, and that Cox would reprise his titular role alongside Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk. Since the announcement, there has been debate on whether the new series would act as a season 4 for Daredevil, or if it would be a complete reboot.

In an interview with Extra, Cox has firmly stated that Daredevil: Born Again is something completely new. Cox says that the series won't be a season 4, and that he's glad Daredevil will be getting a fresh start.

"It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing. Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently."

While Cox's initial Daredevil series took on the darker tone that all of Netflix's Marvel series did, including Jessica Jones and The Punisher, this Disney+ series offers the opportunity to see the lighter side of Cox's Murdock as seen in recent MCU projects. Cox made a brief Daredevil cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and has been seen giving Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) a little legal advice in the midseason trailer for She-Hulk. Daredevil is also slated to appear in the upcoming Marvel series Echo, and the next Spider-Man animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Given that the Netflix Marvel series were so much more tonally dark than the rest of the MCU, it's only fitting that Daredevil should be reborn to fit in with the rest of Marvel's projects. While it's too early to know exactly what to expect from Daredevil's newest series, Cox's recent appearances in MCU projects suggest that the series will be much more light-hearted than the Netflix iteration. It's also likely this means the MCU can pick and choose what, if anything beyond Cox's Matt Murdock and D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, they want to bring over into their canon from the previous series. Whatever they choose, with Cox's stamp of approval on the approach to Daredevil: Born Again, fans can look forward to seeing a whole new side of Matt Murdock in the next few years.
