Dams, bamboo bridges make Chitalmari canals unfit for transportation

Published : 18 Feb 2023 10:05 PM

A Tk 8 crore excavation project for numerous dams and bamboo culverts at Chitalmari in Bagerhat is on the verge of failure. The re-excavated Canal has already been closed for boat traffic by stringing, cutting and tying bamboo poles. Along with this, the water flow is severely blocked. A member of the local union council and the villagers are excited about this.

According to the related sources, under the 36/1 polder of the Water Development Board, the re-excavation work of 12 and a half km canal from the tri-estuary of Chitalmari Sadar Bazar to Madhumati river has been completed recently. Numerous bamboo piers have been installed in the canal for fishing and crossing. As a result of their installation, the newly dug canal is severely obstructed. Boat traffic in the canal has already been stopped by tying a bamboo belt. The most extreme form is from Nalua Bazar to Baraguni Bazar.

Shahidul Islam Sohel, Shamser Fakir, Enayet Fakir, Shahin Sheikh, Saiful Sheikh, Chhota Biswas and Sujat Mondal of Ghola and Daluaguni villages said, "We have requested the villagers to remove the dams, dykes and bamboo poles."

But the influential Esharat Ali member is obstructing the weave. With which tension has spread in the area. We are requesting the local administration to resolve the issue.

Esharat Ali, a member of Ward No. 4 of Barabaria Union Parishad, said, "The bamboo bridges were there for many years. They told me to put one sanko instead of two in front of the madrasa. As I did not agree to this, there was a dispute with them.

Barabaria Union Parishad Chairman Masud Sardar said, "The matter has been reported to the Upazila Executive Officer. I have removed many dams with Chowkidars. There will be no bamboo planks in the canal in exchange for anything. That sign should be removed. If not, the government's 8 crore rupees will fail.

On Saturday afternoon, Chitalmari upazila executive officer said, 'Through the chairman, we have already removed many dams. The rest will also be raised. I will look into the problem with Sanko and take necessary measures.
