The government is going to set up ‘Bangladesh Dairy Development Board’ for the better management of dairy and goat farms.

The government is expected to form a 19-member panel for the board after enactment of a law titled ‘Bangladesh Dairy Development Board Act, 2023’.

The government is moving for establishment and board and enactment of a law aiming to increase production of milk, other dairy products and improve farm management to ensure safe food.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock prepared the draft of the law. Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim placed the Bill in the Parliament in its last session and it was sent to the respective parliamentary standing committee for further scrutiny.

The ‘Bangladesh Dairy Development Board Bill, 2023’ is likely to be passed in the Parliament today (Wednesday). Fisheries and

Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim is scheduled to move the Bill for passage in the House, said Senior Secretary of Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat KM Abdus Salam.

An official of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said that the dairy farming in Bangladesh will get a boost once the proposed dairy development board is established. The law in this regard is being enacted in order to increase production of milk and milk products and ensure quality production and marketing.

He also said that the government has designed the law to facilitate establishment of commercial farms and to take steps to ensure production of safe milk and dairy products.

According to the proposed ‘Bangladesh Dairy Development Board Act, 2023’, there will be a board for dairy farm management, and that board will have a chairman and some members. The board will ensure the quality of dairy products. BSTI ensures the quality of various products. However, the Bangladesh Dairy Development Board will ensure the quality of dairy products and will not come under BSTI.

The dairy sector flourished in some other countries, including India and Pakistan, and various advanced economies following recommendations of their boards.

People related to the dairy sector in Bangladesh have been demanding the establishment of a board for the dairy sector for a long time. They said that the farmers will be able to contribute more to this sector after establishment of the Bangladesh Dairy Development Board. Many countries excelled in milk and beef production by setting up a separate board for dairy development.

They also said that a dairy board will be able to provide necessary support to growers at every stage and work to promote production of diversified milk products.
