The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) distributed seeds and fertilisers to farmers in Bogura on Thursday to help boost early winter vegetable farming and overall crop production this Rabi season.

A total of 3,360 small and marginal farmers received support through the agricultural incentive programme. The incentives aim to promote the cultivation of mustard, wheat, winter onions, lentils, grass peas (khesari), pigeon peas (arhar), and peanuts on both homestead plots and farmlands.

Bogura Deputy Commissioner Hosna Afroza was present as the chief guest. Special guest was Sohel Md Shamsuddin Firoz, Deputy Director of the DAE in Bogura.

The event was presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdul Wazed, while the welcome speech was delivered by Upazila Agriculture Officer Ismat Jahan.

In her speech, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised that agriculture is the backbone of the national economy. She highlighted its crucial role in ensuring food security, fulfilling nutritional needs, and improving farmers’ livelihoods. She urged farmers to adopt safe farming practices and use fertilisers and pesticides properly to reduce production costs and protect the environment.

The Deputy Director of DAE added that the goal of the incentives is to increase crop yields, reduce dependency on imports, ensure food security, and strengthen the rural economy. The distribution of seeds and fertilisers will encourage farmers to cultivate early vegetables and Rabi crops, helping to meet the demand for edible oils as well.

After the event, free seeds and fertilisers were distributed among small and marginal farmers from various unions.

The event was attended by agricultural officials, local representatives, and farmers from different areas.
