Cyclone Remal: Over 2 lakh people affected in Satkhira

More than two lakh people in Satkhira were affected due to Cyclone Remal. Although the Sundarbans saved the people of Satkhira from huge destruction, the cyclonic storm continues to wreak havoc in the district with its effects.

The cyclone hit Assasuni and Shyamnagar upazilas of the district hard.  A total of 1,468 houses (1,192 partially and 276 completely), crops on 806 hectares of land and fishes were damaged in Satkhira. Around 2 lakh 21 thousand 176 people were affected in the cyclone. More than one hundred people were marooned in Jele Palli. A lot of trees were damaged in Shyamnagar and Kaliganj Upazila. An aged person was killed due to the stormy weather in Shyamnagar while he was going to a shelter center there.

The water level of the rivers increased abnormally. The water level rose to 6-7 feet higher than the normal level. There is embankment of 680-kilometer under two departments of Water Development Board of the district. Twelve kilometers embankments at 10 points in Shyamnagar and Assasuni are risky. Two-kilometer area of the embankment is very risky. The submerged water of some risky points of the risky embankments flooded fish enclosures of 200 hectares of land and 606 hectares of cropland. Besides, several hundred families were marooned. However, local volunteers with the assistance of Water Development Board managed to control the water flow with Geo bags and sand.

According to the information of district administration control room, the cyclone damaged more or less 43 unions of Satkhira. Among those, Assasuni and Shyamnagar upzailas were the worst affected. A total of 1,192 houses were partially and 276 houses were completely damaged. Moreover, crops on 806 hectares of land and fishes of 200 hectares of land were damaged due to the strong gales and heavy rain in Satkhira.

Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira Muhammad Humayun Kabir said the effect of Cyclone Remal continued for two days at a stretch. The cyclone caused damages to several people in several Upazilas of the district. Primarily, a list of damages was provided from the information of district administration control room. The full extent of the damage will be assessed and disclosed consecutively.
