Cyclone Mocha likely to hit Bangladesh

Concerted efforts needed to protect lives and property

Cyclonic storm Mocha is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards and cross the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts on May 14, Met Office forecasts.

The depression over southeast Bay and the adjoining area has intensified into a deep depression Indian Meteorological Department has also warned that Cyclone Mocha forming over the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a very severe storm by tomorrow (Friday), where wind speeds can reach 130 kmph. 

The storm is expected to move towards Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts by tomorrow, the weather department predicts. The government should remain fully prepared to face the dire consequences of cyclonic storm Mocha.

All concerned government officials including deputy commissioners upazila nirbahi officers, upazila and union parishad chairmen, members and volunteers of different organisations, including Red Crescent Society, must take all out preparations in advance in the coastal belts. Besides, local lawmakers will also have to work hard to protect the people and their properties at the respective constituencies from the possible impact of the storm. The ministry of disaster management and relief will also have to maintain constant communication with local administration and potentially vulnerable districts in order to take preparation in advance.

A flash flood is likely to occur in a few places of the south-eastern region of the country. Therefore, the authorities concerned will have to continuously carrying out strict surveillance on the cyclone ‘Mocha’ and they will be continued till finish of the disaster after landing on the coast. Besides, they must move the people to the flood shelter center. All the flood shelter centers will also have to be kept ready.

A large number of people lost their lives during different types of severe cyclonic storm like Sidr, Aila and Amphan over the last few years as they did not pay heed to government’s request to go to safer places.

Apart from killing people, these strong cyclonic storms also destroyed houses, crop lands and poultry farms, washed away fish ponds, uprooted trees and breached dams and embankments, leaving a trail of devastation along coast of the country.

People must remain cautious and aware to reduce risks of natural calamities as cyclone is approaching nearer. As the early warning system has been developed, people living in coastal areas before, during and after can protect their lives and property from cyclonic storm ‘Mocha” if they remain alert abiding by all instructions.
