CuU student suspended, held over derogatory comments

A Cumilla University student was arrested on Sunday for hurting religious sentiment under the Information and Communication Technology  Act.   Sub-inspector of Kotwali Model Police station Md. Imam Hasan confirmed the matter. 

The student was also suspended from the university. Joy Dev Chandra Shill, a third year student of Finance and Banking department of CuU, has allegedly made a derogatory remarks about Islam and prophet Mohammad (sm.) on Saturday on a Facebook page namely Voice of America where he wrote, ‘all muslims in the world believe only on terrorism ideology that had been exercised by Hazrat Mohammad (s).’

Joy, however, deleted it after a screenshot of the comment was shared on Cumilla University Facebook group and apologised there.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, a human chain in the name of CuU general students was formed on CuU premises at around 12:00 pm and gave a memorandum to the university vice chancellor demanding immediate punishment and expulsion of the accused man from the university.

CuU vice-chancellor professor Dr Emran Kabir Chowdhury said, ‘It's an extreme malfeasance. we expelled him temporarily. We  will take legal actions looking into the matter.’
