Chattogram Customs House authorities have started the destruction of 73 containers of perishable goods imported through Chattogram Port. Total of 12 refrigerated and dry containers and 61 containers in various off-docks will be destroyed inside the Chattogram port.

The demolition operation was carried out on Monday morning in an open space located in Chowdhury Para on Beribadh Road adjacent to the Bay-terminal in North Halishahar of the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Customs House Md Mahfuz Alam said that the process of destroying perishable goods in 73 containers at the port has started.  Today we plan to destroy 15-20 containers of goods.  Necessary vehicles including cranes, excavators, trailers, trucks have been arranged.  The place will be dug up and covered with rotting products.  As a result, there will be no chance of spreading bad smell.

According to the Chattogram Customs Authority, according to the standing orders issued by the National Board of Revenue, the Expired Goods Destruction Committee of Chattogram Port has decided to destroy expired and unclaimed perishable goods.  According to the decision of the meeting held on October 25, 73 containers of goods will be destroyed.  In these 15 lot containers, there are 15 dry containers with reefers inside the port.  There are 61 containers of various off-dock dry goods.  These containers contain perishable and biodegradable (degradable) ginger, betel nuts, dates, juices, carola seeds, fish food, fish, etc. These decomposed products are released into the market in a circular cycle.  There are also cases of rotting products that are not human food being taken from the ground and sold as animal feed.  Waste products are dried on the beach and mixed with animal feed and marketed.  However, Halishahar Police Station said that they are keeping a close eye on the matter.

Its mentioned that importers often do not take delivery of various products brought from abroad.  Besides, when traders try to import by evading customs, the authorities seize some products during physical examination.  As per rules importers are given notice to take delivery of goods within 30 days.  If they do not receive their import money within the stipulated time, the customs house auctions the goods.  If the imported goods are damaged at the port despite completing the proper procedures, the customs authorities destroy them.
