Cumilla Free Day was observed here Friday amid festivity and enthusiasm.
On this day in 1971, the valiant freedom fighters liberated Cumilla by defeating the Pakistani occupation forces here.
On the occasion of the historic day, the district administration, Sammilita Muktijoddha Sangsad unit command and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote organized a day-long programme in the city.
Sammilita Muktijoddha Sangsad, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote of the district took out a colorful rally from the Town Hall Ground that paraded the main thoroughfares in the city Friday morning.
Hundreds of male and female freedom fighters (FFs) of the district participated in the event.
On the night of December 7, a fierce fight erupted between the Mukti Bahini and the Pakistani forces. The Pakistanis soon started fleeing the area as the FFs took control of their main base at the airport.
Freedom fighters, the following day, declared Cumilla district free when the district's first administrator advocate Ahmed Ali hoisted the national flag of the independent Bangladesh in front of the Town Hall.
Netrakona Free Day celebrated
BSS adds from Netrakona: People living in Netrakona observed the Netrakona Free Day Saturday (December 9). The historic day of December 9, 1971 is remembered as a "red letter day" by the people of Netrakona as the heroic freedom fighters freed the soil of the district from the occupation of the then Pakistani armed forces by driving away the occupation forces on the day.
Every year, local people celebrate Netrakona Liberation Day amid festivities. Like previous years, all-out preparations have been made here by the local people and freedom fighters as well as Netrakona district administration to celebrate the day with great enthusiasm.
Netrakona district administration and district Muktizoddha Sangsad jointly chalked out elaborate programs to celebrate the day.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at the memorial monument of the martyred freedom fighters, bringing out colorful rallies in the district town, holding of discussion meeting and organizing of musical soiree on patriotic songs, district administration sources here said.
