At Titas in Comilla, as the land submerged in water during Cyclone Sitrang has been dried up, melon yield worth million Tk is being sold to market. With such a yield of melon in the land that farmers had given up hope, relief returned to the farmers. Early varieties are being sold in the market every day. Depending on the type, each melon is being sold for 200 to 400 taka.
Going to the surface, it can be seen that Sattar Mia, a farmer of the upazila, is collecting melon from his land. He is cutting the fruit from the ripe melon tree in the middle of the green field and bringing it to the side of the field and putting the fruit in the basket.
Farmer Sattar Mia said, every year I cultivate melon. Last year we cultivated melon on time but this time we cultivated early variety melon in 2 bigha land. A few days ago, when the land was flooded during the cyclone, it was very difficult. I don't know if the field is finished! But the water went down in a day, so there was no damage. I have given only biological pesticides on the advice of the agriculture office. About 12,000 rupees have been spent along with preparation of land from seedlings. So far I have sold about 50 thousand Tk of melon. In the next two months, about lakhs of rupees will be sold. At present one melon is being sold from 200 to 400 depending on the size.
Kaushar Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Kalaigobindpur Block, said that on October 24, I went to the field of Oicharchar for field survey to observe the damage of Sitrang. When the farmer Sattar Miar saw melon farming land, he was really sad. His land is submerged in water. Generally, pumpkin plants do not tolerate standing water for more than 1 day.
As a result, the tree dies. Finally, as the water level receded, his land yielded as expected.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Salah Uddin said that there are few first class farmers in Titus; Sattar Mia is one of them. He has a strong weakness for agriculture.
Now by planting the saplings in poly bags, he planted the saplings in the field. After the water recedes, it is advised to use essential medicines to protect against insect attacks.
