UNB, Cox's Bazar: A student of Chittagong University (CU) drowned and his two classmates went missing while bathing in the sea at Himchhari point of Cox’s Bazar beach early Tuesday, university officials said.
They said KM Sadman Rahman, son of KM Anisur Rahman from Mirpur, Dhaka, was a Development Studies student and resident of Shaheed Mohammad Farhad Hossain Hall.
The missing students are Asif Ahmed and Aritra Hasan, also students of the same department and residential hall. Both hail from Bogura district.
According to their classmates, Sadman and four others went to Cox’s Bazar on Monday afternoon after their first-year final examinations.
In the morning, three of them went into the sea to bathe at Himchhari where they were swept away by strong waves.
Sadman's body was later found washed ashore but the other two remain missing.
Mohammad Sohaib, chairman of the Development Studies department, said Sadman’s body was still at the Himchhari beach while a search operation is underway for the two others.
CU Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif said he immediately contacted Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police and the Fire Service for assistance about the search operation shortly after he was informed in the morning.
The search operation was being disrupted due to adverse weather, said Asif Khan, duty officer at Cox’s Bazar Fire Service Station.
