The Chittagong University (CU) administration has launched an environment-friendly electronic car (e-car) service on campus to ease the distress of students regarding transportation.

CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Yeahiya Akhtar officially inaugurated the service at the zero point of the university at 10 am on Tuesday.

To reduce the long-standing suffering and ensure environment-friendly modern passenger service, the electric golf car or e-cars service has been officially launched.

CU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif and Dean of the Faculty of Sociology Enayet Ullah Patwari were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

The university administration said that this e-cars or golf cart has been initially launched as a joint initiative of 'Ma Enterprise' and 'Green Future Bangladesh'. The authorities hope that by launching this service, a sustainable solution will be found to the problem of covering extra distances on campus, CNG crisis and fare problems.

The CU Vice Chancellor said, “We hope that students will reach their classes on time using e-cars. These vehicles are quite easy to drive and the fare has been set affordably so that students can easily use it. This new service will reduce the travel expenses of students and will play an important role in building an environment-friendly campus.”

CU Pro Vice Chancellor Md. Kamal Uddin said, 'We have six cars in the initial phase. Four more cars will be added next week. The university needs 30. However, if this program is successful, 20 more cars are scheduled to be added from June.'

It is known that the e-cars will run on two routes on an experimental basis.  The first route is from Zero Point to the Biological Faculty, and the second route will reach Zero Point again via Suhrawardy Intersection, Gate No. 2, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Social Sciences. Keeping in mind the convenience of the students, the fare has been set from a minimum of 5 Taka to a maximum of 15 Taka. The driver and fare collector will be employed by the institution.

Students are happy with the introduction of e-cars. Students said that the campus will be free from the violence of auto and CNG syndicates. There was a problem of transportation on the campus for a long time. All the suffering will be alleviated through e-cars. We will find relief in traveling on campus. Thank you to the CU administration for introducing such a service.

CU Proctor Dr. Mohammad Tanvir Haider Arif said, 'We have introduced e-cars to fulfill the long-standing demands of the students and to reduce the inconvenience of transportation.  Other universities in the country have already launched this service and are providing good service.
