Due to cyclone Amphan, all activities at the Chattogram port have been stopped following hoisting of danger signal-9.
"We are ready to deal with the cyclone," said Zafar Alam, member (administration), Chattogram Port Authority, CPA, “we also issued alert- number 4, the port's own warning level.”

He said, “Operational activities of the port are completely closed, all ships have been evacuated from the jetties to safer places.

Equipment has also been removed to prevent any accidents and damage.
All the ocean going large ships stationed at the outer berth have been sent to safety in the deep sea. All lighter ships of the internal routes have been sent to the upper stream of the port-channel near Karnaphuli bridge.

On Monday, Chattogram Port issued its own warning level-3 after the issuance of danger signal number 6. All kinds of preparations have been made including the opening of the control room to monitor the overall situation. Ocean-going ships have been instructed to move deep sea near Saint Martin’s Island and ships of inland routes to leave jetty areas.
CPA source said a total of 88 ships are in port to unload imported goods.

After the cyclone passes, the port will resume operations as soon as the danger signal is lifted. We also have that preparation, Zafor Alam said.

When the Meteorological Department issues signal No. 3, the port issues a first stage warning or 'Alert-1'. Port Alert-2 is issued for signal number 4. Besides, 'Alert-3' was issued for danger signals 5, 6, and 7. In case of danger signals 8, 9, and 10, the highest alert or 'Alert-4' is also issued in the port. Then all the activities of the port are stopped.

The Chattogram port came to a standstill in the last week of March as a general holiday was declared across the country due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Unprecedented entanglement of ships and goods is created. Due to various measures taken by the authorities, the situation in the Chattogram port, which deals with over 85 percent foreign trade of the country was normal, but a standstill came again due to the cyclone.
