We express deep concern over repeated fire incidents in Sitakunda of Chattogram district. At least six people were killed and 50 others injured as a fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at a private oxygen plant following an explosion in Kadam Rasul (Keshabpur) area of Sitakunda upazila of the district.

The fire started at Seema Oxygen Plant around 4:30 pm after a big bang. A 7-member probe committee has been formed by Chattogram district administration to investigate the fire.

On the other hand, at least three persons were killed and 10 others injured an explosion took place at a building in Science Lab area in Dhaka on Sunday morning. In January last year at least 40 people were killed and over 400 injured after a huge fire broke out at BM Container Depot Ltd, a Netherlands-Bangladesh joint venture company at Sitakunda in Chattogram.

The Sitakunda oxygen plant explosion again

appeared as a lesson for all businessmen

especially those who store risky and inflammable materials

without taking any safety measures

We pray for eternal peace of the departed souls and convey deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. However, the authorities concerned must take prompt measures for treatment of the injured people. Besides, local people alongside the government will also have to come forward in taking measures to give all out support to the affected people.

Earlier we have also seen many people met the tragic end of their lives and while many more received injuries in the fire when godown of chemical and flammable materials exploded in spite of knowing about the risk of fire accidents.

The government will have to take firm stance to remove inflammable and risky materials from any business establishments

The Sitakunda oxygen plant explosion again appeared as a lesson for all businessmen especially those who store risky and inflammable materials without taking any safety measures.

The businessmen must build a separate modern warehouse for risky and inflammable materials alongside ensuring fire safety where any blaze could be contained promptly before it could cause any casualty or major damage. Besides, all concerned must stay alert against recurrence of such tragedy anywhere in the country.
