The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday sued Chattogram city unit leader of Jubo League (JL) Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar and his wife Jasmine Akhtar for acquiring wealth worth around Tk 3 crore beyond their known sources.

Assistant Director of Chattogram District ACC Office-1 Md Nowshad Ali filed the case, said Chattogram Deputy Director Subel Ahmed.

According to the case statement, Jasmine acquired wealth worth Tk 1.83 crore beyond her known sources of income and concealed information about another property Tk 15.5 lakh, and her husband allegedly assisted her in acquiring the assets.

Babar is widely known as a close aide of former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.

Law enforcement agencies have, however, listed him as a top fugitive involved in several criminal activities.

Over the years, Babar repeatedly hit headlines for controlling railway tenders, dominating local politics and involvement in numerous murders.

On June 24, 2013, a fierce clash between Baber’s and former Chhatra League leader Saiful Alam Limon’s groups over railway tenders left two people, including a child, dead.

Later, he was arrested and subsequently suspended from Jubo League over the double murder case.

He has also been accused in several killings, including those of Akbar and Murad in Raozan upazila, BNP activist Azad, the Mirza Lane double murder, City College Chhatra League leader Ashik, Russell in Tamakumundi Lane and Farid in Sholoshohor, among others.

During the July 2024 Uprising, Babar and his associates were involved in armed clashes with protesters.

Following the fall of the Awami League government, he reportedly fled the country to Dubai again.
