A scientific seminar titled “Improvement of Treatment and Clinical Practice Including Elimination of Differences in Bone Degenerative Diseases” was held to mark the second anniversary of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Chattogram 250-bed General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The seminar took place at the hospital’s conference room, presided over by Superintendent Dr Md Ekram Hossain. It was moderated by Dr Moumita Das, Junior Consultant (Anesthesia and ICU). Chittagong Divisional Director (Health) Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi attended the event as the chief guest, while Chattogram District Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam was present as the special guest.

The keynote presentation was delivered through multimedia by Dr Palash Nag, Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr HM Hamidullah Mehedi, Consultant of the Medicine Department, also spoke, while Dr Dost Mohammad (Joy), Senior Executive of Square Pharmaceuticals PLC’s Medical Services Department, discussed pharmaceutical products related to musculoskeletal health. Senior Regional Manager Fakhrul Ahmed expressed his gratitude on behalf of the company.

The anniversary celebration began with the ceremonial cutting of a cake, led by Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, marking two years of the department’s service. Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Md Touhidul Anwar, alongside doctors and healthcare professionals from various hospital departments, also attended the programme.

In his speech, Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi commended the department’s dedication despite limited manpower, saying, “The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department is working sincerely to alleviate patients’ pain and improve their quality of life. Alongside general patients, doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff are also benefiting from its services.”

Highlighting the global challenge of bone-related diseases, he added, “One in three women and one in five men suffer from osteoporosis or bone loss worldwide. To prevent this, lifestyle changes, regular exercise, and diets rich in calcium and vitamin D are essential, along with timely medical advice.” He also emphasised plans to further enhance healthcare quality in the hospital’s other departments.

In his presentation, Dr Palash Nag shared that since the department’s inception in 2023, over 10,000 patients have been treated at the physiotherapy unit, generating Tk 6,02,340 in government revenue. Additionally, 11,680 patients received treatment at the outpatient unit, including 67 referred and 33 admitted cases. He noted that the post of physiotherapist remains vacant, and filling it would help expand services further.

The event concluded with a call for greater awareness of pain management and rehabilitation services to promote healthier, more active lives.
