A case was filed on Monday under the Cyber Security Act, accusing a journalist and a union parishad member allegedly spreading pictures and fake videos of another woman UP member in Barishal.

Barishal Cyber Tribunal judge, Ghulam Farooq, directed the Barishal Airport police station officer-in-charge to submit a report after investigating the issue.

Fatema Akhter Lipi, a reserved-seat member of the Ward No-5 of Madhabpasha UP under Babuganj, filed the case against a UP member of the same ward, Mahbubur Rahman Sikder, and Khan Mainuddin, a Barishal correspondent of the Bangladesh Bulletin.

Nazmul Hasan, the tribunal’s bench clerk, said that the plaintiff, Fatema, alleged that the accused UP member embezzled government-allocated money, rice and wheat, and sold them on the black market.

As Fatema protested against the corruption and complained the matter to the Babuganj upazila nirbahi officer, the accused UP member created a picture and a fake video of her smoking, which was published on Facebook, and an online media platform to tarnish her dignity and honour, said Nazmul.

The accused also spread information that Fatema was a drug addict and smoked in public, he added.

The main accused UP member could not be reached for comment, but the another accused Mainuddin, said that he was not involved in the incident and was unsure why he was accused
