Corona death toll has crossed the century mark in Chattogram. First 50 people died in the first 49 days of corona detection in the district while the next 50 died in just 17 days. Medical condition is getting worse in Chattogram as at least three corona patients have died here every day for the last 19 days.
According to the Chattogram Civil Surgeon's Office, 104 people died of corona infection in the district till now. Among them 83 died in Chittagong city and 21 in the upazilas. 80 of these deceased were males and 24 were females.
Meanwhile disabled Roni Barua, 30, a resident of Oxygen area of the city who was suffering from fever and cold for several days died without treatment. On Friday morning, he suddenly started having difficulty breathing.
Relatives rushed him to the Field hospital in Salimpur, but they had to return empty handed. As last hope he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where no doctor-nurse came for his treatment even after 20 minutes.
Patients and relatives have been crying for treatment at CMCH since Friday morning as no treatment is provided there for shortness of breath or chest pain.
Many patients are bringing their own oxygen cylinders as everything costs two to three times higher. Yet the constant efforts of relatives to save their beloved ones is turning futile.
Not only today but for the last several days there has been anarchy in the medical system in the city. Patients die every day due to lack of treatment. Private hospitals are not following any instructions. There is no timely treatment in government hospitals. As no one is there to monitor.
Preeti Bikash Dutt, 62, of South Nalapara died without treatment last Thursday due to chest pain. She was taken to three private hospitals in the city but no hospital admitted her. She finally died after arriving at CMCH.
General secretary of Chittagong University Journalists' Association Jobayer Chowdhury rushed to the National Hospital with his sick father on Wednesday night.
But the hospital did not admit the patient even though they said on the phone that he would be admitted. After a long wait, Ward boy spoke to the doctor on the phone and sent them back. Later, Jobayer Chowdhury's father died on the way to CMCH.
Fatema Akhter Mukta, 30, died due to lack of ICU last Tuesday. She was 10 months pregnant. She was suffering from shortness of breath for five days. No ICU bed was found even after much searching. Eventually the unfortunate mother fell into the lap of death with her unborn child.
According to experts, the actual number of deaths is unknown as a result of testing less samples than needed. Many respiratory patients are also dying due to lack of proper treatment and oxygen, ventilator and ICU in the city.
The highest number of deaths in the city was in Halishahar and Pahartali. 18 people have died in these two police station with 9 people dying of corona in each. The highest death toll in the upazila was 4 in Sitakunda, 3 in Patiya and 3 in Lohagara.
