Crop fields drying up due to severe drought

Tarash Upazila is inhabited by Chalan bil, known as Granabhara. After the flood in this upazila, severe heat has started. The temperature of the last few days has caused severe drought and the fields of cropland have become dry. Ropa Aman rice seedlings are burnt by the sun. After visiting the crop fields of different villages of the upazila, such a picture has been seen in Ropa Aman paddy fields.

Meanwhile, farmers and working people are sighing in the absence of rain. This has affected the planting of Aman rice. Some have planted aman seeds but the land has turned dry due to lack of rain. Many farmers are in trouble for not being able to plant rice again.Abdul Aziz, a farmer of Gonta village of Talam Union of the upazila, said that there has been a severe water crisis. Due to lack of rain water, the land is bursting. But due to financial crisis, he could not irrigate the land. Seedlings are fading due to lack of water. There is no water especially in the high lands. Even due to lack of water, planting in some lands has not been possible yet.

Farmer Rahman said that the plants are getting damaged due to the sun. It will cause loss to many farmers to buy seed paddy and plant it.

Guava trader Soleman Sarkar of Gonta village said that his guava garden has dried up in the sun. He is worried about the yield. If the land is not watered, the fruit will not be big and fertile. So he arranged irrigation at extra cost

In this context, Upazila Agriculture Officer Lutfun­nahar Luna said that the cropland is bursting and turning to ashes due to intense heat. Farmers have to continue irrigation in the current season. 

As a result, the cost will increase. However, there has been no major damage to the crop so far due to lack of rain. Rain is likely next week.
