Criminal killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Gazipur city early on Monday.  The deceased was identified as Rabiul Islam Rabi, 33, of Tongi area in Gazipur. He was accused in at least 14 cases filed on different charges, including murder, robbery and arms dealing, said a RAB official. 

A patrolling team of RAV-1 came under attack at Pubail-Satpoa area by at least five criminals, Kamruzzaman, assistant superintend of police (ASP), said.

They fired gunshots at the team, injuring one member of the elite force, the ASP said. In retaliation, RAB fire back, triggering a gunfight and leaving Rabi dead at the spot, the RAB official added.

The rest of the gang managed to flee the scene, he added. Two foreign pistols, one locally made  pistol, a shooter-gun and 3,840 yaba  pills were recovered from the spot, Kamruzzaman said. The body was sent to Sheheed Tazuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he added. The injured Rab member took primary treatment from the same hospital, the ASP said.
