A model mosque has been constructed at Haripur Upazila Parishad premises in Thakurgaon as part of the construction work of a model mosque in different districts and upazilas of the country. But before it was handed over to the committee, cracks appeared on various walls and roofs of the mosque. The local worshipers were terrified.

It is learned that the construction work of a model mosque in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district started in August 2019 at an estimated cost of Tk 12.15 crore. A contractor named Khairul Kabir Rana got the construction work order of the mosque.

Meanwhile, this mosque was one of the 50 model mosques and Islamic cultural centers inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on June 10 last year. Although the mosque and the cultural center were officially inaugurated, the mosque has not been officially handed over yet.

According to the contractor, the mosque was not formally handed over to the committee as it was not possible to install electrical substations, separate transformers and lightning protection devices for the use of fans and ACs in the mosque.

Authorities said the mosque will be handed over to the committee within a month.

The model mosque, Imam Mufti Masudur Rahman, journalist Anwar Hossain and many others complained that the situation was caused by working with substandard goods. Cracks in the mosque cannot be accepted.

MKM Nurul Hasan, Sub-Divisional Engineer, Public Works Department, Thakurgaon, visited the mosque on February 23 after the news of cracks in the mosque became known.

MKM Nurul Hasan, sub-divisional engineer of the public works department, admitted seeing cracks in different parts of the mosque and said that there was nothing to frighten for this. In this regard, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Karim said, “I have heard the complaint verbally. I will go and inspect it myself.”
