Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has celebrated the 137th Port Day through various events on Thursday.

The day's program began through hoisting the official flag at the port premises.

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail and Port Member (Engineering) Commodore Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman hoisted the flag along with CPA members and department heads at Bandar Bhawan square. At that time, all vessels and ships stationed at Chittagong port were blown a one-minute whistle.

On the occasion of Port Day, officials present at the Port building cut the Port Day cake with the employees and exchanged greetings with everyone while Chittagong Port Officers Association, Chittagong Port Employees Parishad, various stakeholders of the port and leaders of other organizations were present.

136 years ago, the main sea port of the country was established on this day. In the early days of the British rule, English and native traders built wooden jetties on the Karnaphuli river at their own expense in return for an annual salami of one taka.

Later in 1860 the first two temporary jetties were built.  Chittagong Port Commissionerate was established in 1877.

Two mooring jetties were constructed at Chittagong port in 1988. Chittagong Port Commissioner came into force on 25 April 1888.
