Court grants bail to journo arrested in Savar

A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to a journalist named Mamun Molla, who was arrested following an arrest warrant over a petition case charged over defamation of a man named Abdul Alim in Ashulia in Savar.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon Ashulia police led by SI Forhad, arrested him from his residence located in Kathgora area in Ashulia, and later on, Sunday morning produced him before a Dhaka court.

Mamun Mollah works at an English daily living at Ashulia in Savar.

Police sources said they arrest him following a court arrest warrant issued over a petition case filed by Abdul Alim, a local resident of Ashulia with a Dhaka court for allegedly making a false statement and defamatory information on social site Facebook.

However, seeking anonymity, several locals said Alim was familiar as an influential people in the area and filed the case against Mollah following a land dispute.

After being released on bail Molla said police beat him up and tortured him intentionally during made the arrest from his residence even they, police, also beaten up and kicked off his 13 years-old nephews named Shimul as he was crying and begging to release Mollah.

However, refusing the allegation, SI Forhad, Ashulia police station claimed no such incident happened during made the arrest claiming that many local arbiters were present at the time.

Contacted Ziaul Islam, Inspector, Ashulia police station said not any such incident supposed to happen, so they will look into the allegation and action will be taken if they found verity of the allegation.
