A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) director Afzal Naser in connection with the murder of BNP activist Makbul Hossain, following an earlier murder case filed at Mirpur Police Station.
On Sunday (April 5), investigation officer Sub-Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of the DB Police Motijheel Zonal Team produced the accused before the court, seeking his arrest to be formally shown in the case and requesting a five-day remand.
During the hearing, the accused was placed in the dock, after which Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah approved the application to show him arrested in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi argued in favor of remand, while defense counsel opposed the plea and sought bail. Following arguments from both sides, the court granted a three-day remand, confirmed Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Rukunuzzaman.
Detective Branch police arrested former army Lieutenant Colonel Afzal Naser late last Sunday night from a residence in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka. The following day, he was placed on a six-day remand in another case relating to the death of Delwar Hossain during an anti-discrimination movement.
After completion of that remand, investigators produced him before the court again on Sunday and sought an order to keep him in custody.
According to case documents, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced a one-point demand program on December 10, 2022. Prior to that, on December 7, DB Police officers conducted an operation at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, allegedly carrying out vandalism and attacking thousands of party leaders and activists gathered nearby.
During the incident, BNP activist Makbul Hossain was shot and killed. In connection with the incident, a case was filed on September 30, 2024, by Mahfuzur Rahman against 256 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
