In a recent parliamentary session, the Minister of Textiles and Jute, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, said that the entire demand for textiles in the country is being met locally.

Responding to a question from government party MP Anwar Hossain Khan, the minister provided insights into the state of the textile industry during the question and answer session at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

According to Nanak, the annual demand for textiles in the local market is approximately 7 million meters, and the entire requirement is being produced within the country.

He further elaborated on the export scenario, stating that the demand for woven and denim fabrics for readymade garments totals 8 billion meters. Out of this, four billion meters are produced locally, while the remaining four billion meters are imported.

Highlighting efforts to enhance the textile industry’s efficiency, the minister disclosed that 16 out of 25 textile mills under the control of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation  (BTMC) have received in-principle approval for operation under Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Two contracts have been completed, and two others are in the final stages of approval.

Currently, the country boasts 900 private textile mills.
